Description

The RX Dragon Tail is a handcrafted soft plastic bladed jig trailer built for SoCal inshore fishing — and that’s exactly what it was designed around from day one.

When I want action on the fall without overpowering the head, this is the one I reach for.

What It’s Built For

The body shape translates blade vibration straight into tail kick — tight on the retrieve, active on the fall.

It keeps up with the head’s action without overpowering it, helping your bladed jig:

  • Track straighter
  • Stay in the strike zone longer
  • Produce on the drop when fish commit

Why It Produces

When you kill the bait and let it fall, the Dragon Tail does the work on calico bass, sand bass, and spotted bay bass.

That controlled action gives fish something to track and commit to below the retrieve.

How I Fish It

I fish the Dragon Tail primarily as a bladed jig trailer:

  • Threaded onto the collar for a standard presentation
  • Paired with the Cheapskate for a full SoCal setup

It’s especially effective on a pop-and-pause retrieve, where the bait falls and the tail stays active.

Weedless Rigging Advantage

That body shape also does something I didn’t plan for — rig it weedless on a Texas rig and the hook naturally tucks under the scale detail.

It’s one of the most weedless trailers I’ve fished without doing anything extra.

Forage Profile

That profile also resembles a razor clam — real forage for spotted bay bass and sand bass in SoCal harbors.

Additional Uses

It’s also been solid on:

  • Swim jigs
  • Jika rigs
  • Drop shot
  • Belly-weighted hooks as a standalone swimbait

Subtle enough for pressured fish, bold enough to trigger reaction bites.

When to Choose It

  • When you want action on the fall
  • When fish are committing below the retrieve
  • When a paddle tail is too much and a slug isn’t enough

Alternative Profiles

When fish want a craw profile instead, the RX Skeleton Craw is the alternative.

How to Rig It

  • Thread onto your bladed jig collar for standard presentation
  • Texas rig on a 3/0 or 4/0 EWG hook for weedless standalone use

I use Blacktail Fishing hooks for both setups.
