The JKB LC DD by Jon Kay of JK Baits is a deep diving crankbait built to hit rocks. It dives to 20 feet and has the kind of bottom contact action that triggers calico bass, sand bass, and spotted bay bass on the wall at MDR. I’ve been fishing JK Baits for a couple of years since I won a side pot at Spotty Bowl on a crankbait, and when I put together the Chovie Death drop Jon was the first call I made.

The Chovie Death drop started at a fuel dock after seven hours fishing Spotty Bowl. I cracked open a Dr. Death, took a sip, and thought that’s a color. Three colorways, all gold body bait fish variations. Dr. Chovie is your black back with gold — classic bait fish profile. Bluechovie Buzzsaw brings in the blue and gold and kicks a Dorado hue depending on the light. Chovie Reaper is purple and gold. If you know you know. Gold body is one of my favorite crankbait colors and some of my biggest crankbait fish have come on gold. These colorways are inspired by Liquid Death, not affiliated with them.

How to fish it: cast past your target, drive the rod tip down to get the bait diving quickly, and work it back with the rod tip low and the bait grinding along the bottom. When it deflects off a rock, that irregular action is exactly what triggers the bite. A crankbait that swims is far less effective than one that’s ticking, deflecting, and occasionally hanging up on the structure you’re fishing. Line matters — fluorocarbon gets the bait to its rated depth. Braid fights it the whole way down.
