Chovie Death Slow Pitch Jig

Description

Connor Doyle of Reaper Slow Pitch makes two slow pitch jigs that I’ve included in this drop. The Reaper Micro Bomber at 20g is the one I reach for on back bay pylon fishing from a float tube or kayak. The Reaper Micro at 15g is Connor’s micro jig built for shallow water and pitching to pilings. For this run Connor supplied the blanks and I painted and foiled them myself.

The Chovie Death drop started at a fuel dock after seven hours fishing Spotty Bowl. I cracked open a Dr. Death, took a sip, and thought that’s a color. Three colorways, all gold body bait fish variations. Dr. Chovie is your black back with gold — classic bait fish profile. Bluechovie Buzzsaw brings in the blue and gold and kicks a Dorado hue depending on the light. Chovie Reaper is purple and gold. If you know you know. How to fish it: flip or pitch onto a pylon, let it hit the sand, pop the rod tip up, drop it back down and let it flutter. Two to three pops per pylon. Work each pylon right, middle, and left before moving on. Open boat slips are worth hitting in each back corner as far back as you can reach. Watch the line on the fall — the bite comes on the drop almost every time. Use the lightest weight that still gets you into the strike zone before the current pulls you off the spot. Go up to 30-40 grams when current is running hard. Spin gear is the right call — a spinning reel releases line with less friction on the fall and that free fall is where the action comes from. Run 15 lb AFTCO fluorocarbon.
